Football still a possibility at big 3 Cal State schools

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The California State University system’s plan for a mostly virtual fall semester due to the coronavirus pandemic doesn’t necessarily close the door on football at its three schools that play in the far-flung Mountain West Conference.

San Diego State is looking at having football players return to campus no earlier than July 7 and is making plans to play the season as scheduled, athletic director John David Wicker said.

SDSU is proceeding because it envisions a fall schedule that includes a hybrid model of classes, in which some students will be on campus for in-person instruction such as labs while other classes will be held online.

NCAA President Mark Emmert said recently that campuses must be open “in one fashion or another” in order to have sports this fall.

Wicker said SDSU had been planning for a hybrid model, no matter what, and feels that CSU

Man ‘plays’ badminton with NEOWISE comet in viral photo

That’s one way to stay active during a pandemic.

An English man took a picture of himself “playing” badminton with the NEOWISE comet above the Quantock Hills in Somerset, England, British news agency SWNS reports.

Laurence Douglas-Greene said he wanted to create an image no one had seen yet, despite the comet having been visible on Earth since July 7.

After the coronavirus shut down the NBA season along with everything else, basketball is set to return on July 30 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex, inside Disney World in Orlando, Florida. Negotiations between the league and the NBA Players Association resulted in a new deal that will allow play to resume after a hiatus of nearly five months, but the final pro basketball games of 2020 will be unlike any previous year.

The best 22 of the league’s 30 teams will play eight games to finish the regular season. From these, the top seven teams in each conference will advance, with the final eighth seed in each conference being determined by a potential play-in tournament before the traditional 16-team playoffs.

Fitness Basics: Swimming Is for Everyone

Angela Lane has great memories of swimming during her childhood, spending endless summer days at the pool to find refuge from the Arkansas heat. She became a lifeguard as a teen, and she swam for fitness during high school and college.

Two years ago, things were different. At age 31, Lane weighed 200 pounds. She hadn’t been in a pool for more than 10 years.

She began a weight loss program, and started to think about exercising again.

“People would tell me, ‘You need to run or walk,’ but when I tried that, my ankles and knees hurt,” she says. “When I finally realized I needed to exercise, I said, ‘OK, what do I like?’ because if you like it, you’re going to do it more.”

She took to the pool. Her first goal was completing just one lap.

“Each week, I would get stronger

Weight loss and physical and mental health

Swimming offers a variety of benefits to mental and physical health. Fifteen are listed below.

    1. A whole-body workout

Swimming engages almost every major muscle group, requiring a person to use their arms, legs, torso, and stomach.

    Swimming also:

    • increases the heart rate without putting stress on the body
    • improves strength
    • tones muscles
    • enhances fitness
    • helps to manage weight

    2. Building cardiovascular strength

Cardiovascular exercise, often referred to as cardio, involves the heart, lungs, and circulatory system. A thorough workout routine, such as one that features swimming, will include this type of exercise.

Research suggests that swimmers have half the mortality rate of inactive people. A study from 2016 indicates that swimming can help to lower blood pressure and control blood sugar levels.

    3. Suitable for all ages and fitness levels

Some types of exercise may be challenging for people who are new or feel very unfit.

    However, swimming allows
